Oklahoma Artists Donate Special Guitars for Museum Giveaway

OKLAHOMA CITY — In a fun twist related to its original exhibition, “The Guitar: Art, Artists and Artisans,” the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has invited three Oklahoma artists to paint guitars that will be given away in a drawing at the end of the exhibition which runs from February 12 through May 9. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to enter the prize drawing.

The decorated guitars were painted by Matt Goad, Erin L. Oldfield and Clint Stone. Museum visitors will be able to see and hold the guitars and take photos holding them in front of a specially designed photo opp background that resembles Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, home to some of music’s most revered performances.

The Museum purchased the guitars and the artists donated their time and talents to the project. The finished works are as diverse as the artists who created them. Goad’s is blue and black with red accents and has a play on the modern art theme. It is titled “Tastee Licks.” Oldfield painted a whimsical Western landscape. It includes a cowboy lassoing the Museum’s name and exhibit title on the back. Stone created a guitar titled “Yo Chupacabra.” The black and multicolored work around “The Day of the Dead” theme has skulls and a depiction of the chupacabra creature.

The guitars exhibition includes nearly 50 examples—including some regarded as works of art and many that are historically significant. Major Sponsor of the exhibition is The Bilby Foundation. Associate sponsors are Alan and Nadine Levin and Oklahoma Vintage Guitar.

Matt Goad
Born the son of a preacher, Matt Goad was raised in the 1970s and 80s on Captain Crunch, Captain Kangaroo and Captain Beefheart. He lives and works in Oklahoma City as a graphic designer at Funnel Design Group and enjoys making music with his band Feel Spectres.

"For me the most common of situations provide the most interesting subject matter: eating, drinking, sleeping, smelling, touching, hearing, feeling. Driving to work, saving for the future, mowing the lawn, watching TV. It's these typical/trivial, routine and familiar 'scenes' I find the deepest and most meaningful inspiration."

Erin L. Oldfield
Erin L. Oldfield holds a B.A. in graphic design from the University of Central Oklahoma. She is an artist in Oklahoma City working primarily in acrylic paint. Most of her artwork is a bright and whimsical take on cityscapes and nature. She is a volunteer for various arts organizations, including the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. Oldfield shares her passion for creative expression with young artists as an instructor at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Library System and with her two young children.

Clint Stone
Clint Stone is the artistic director for the City Arts Center, an independent art constant, as well as an artist who has exhibited regularly since 2000. His work has been featured in solo and two-
person shows as well as in juried, invitational and group shows across the state of Oklahoma. He illustrated the September/October 2008 cover of Oklahoma Today magazine that is now a fine art poster that can be purchased through oklahomatoday.com. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. Stone lives with his wife, Shannon Claire, son, Lucas Cicero, and dog, Ollie, in Oklahoma City.
