Persimmon Hill magazine is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's award-winning journal on the West.
The magazine premiered in 1970, an occasion that also marked the fifth anniversary of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. With the exception of a publishing hiatus in 1985 and 1986, Persimmon Hill has been published continuously as the museum's flagship publication.
In the past 35 years, the magazine has doubled in size, expanded its editorial content, and enhanced its graphic design. Today it enjoys a reputation as the finest western magazine in the country. Just recently, the magazine won the prestigious Upper Case Award, the highest honor given to four-color magazines by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and a photography award from the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2001, the magazine received a regional Addy Award for excellence in editorial content and graphic design.
During its history, the magazine has provided a veritable parade of cowboy heroes for its readers. Among the notable westerners profiled have been John Wayne, Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Walter Brennan, Randolph Scott, Harry Carey Jr., and Roy Rogers.
Some of the West's most noted writers have been featured including John Steinbeck, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Willa Cather, Louis L'Amour, J. Frank Dobie, Elmer Kelton, and William Wittliff. The work of photographers Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Kurt Markus, Laura Gilpin, Ike Fordyce, Barbara Van Cleve, David Stoecklein, and Christopher Marona also have been published in Persimmon Hill.
